The Andamans are said to be named after Handuman as Hanuman is called in Malay. Here are some pictures of these beautiful islands for you to enjoy.

The tribal names of most of the places are lost possibly to general public. The scholars may know them… The English gave their own name to everything and some Indian Governments have tried to either restore the original Indian names or give them new Sanskrit names.

Kingfisher Red gives you return tickets from Bangalore to Port Blair for about Rs 13500, if you plan well enough in advance and the planes are very cute and small, they come with their own built in ladder. The hotel there for vegetarians is Blue Sea Hotel, at “Mid-Point” for Rs 1500 a night during the off-season, it is clean and the service is good. Transport is a ripoff till you find out the correct rates. We paid Rs 200/- on the first day for a round trip to Carbyn’s Cove Beach.

This was a little temple when I was a little girl. There were rumours of animal sacrifices so I was too terrified to visit. Almost 4 decades later, the temple has grown so much. I took pictures from the outside.. old habits die hard I guess. I wonder if I will ever go in? This is near Sankey tank and the institute of wood sciences.

Corn being roasted on coals

One of the great joys of growing up and living in Bangalore (and many places in India) is eating freshly roasted corn on the cob, with a touch of lemon, salt, coriander and green chilly paste.

These were being roasted for me outside Sankey Tank.

American Sweet Corn in a cup with a dash of butter or foreign flavours three times as costly as the roasted corn, has started to give it competition in India.

Pamban Bridge, Rameswaram

There are frequent and cheap buses from Rameswaram to Pamban Bridge. Though Autos are supposed to charge Rs 7 per km, they demand upto Rs 30 or 40 per km and are to be avoided where possible. The public support the autodrivers. You can rent somewhat rickety cycles near the temple for Rs 5 an hour. Ladies’ cycles are also available. There are no good maps in english, it is best to learn a few tamil phrases and letters before going.

There are beautiful and clean bathing spots near Pamban bridge. (Agni Theertham is not clean at all and too busy.)

However since I did not use any sunblock lotion, my face is charred and it may take a few days to “peel and heal”.

The govt. glass boat rides do not show you these beautiful reefs and coloured fish. They charge you for a full boat if no one is there, We paid Rs 320, to look over the boat’s edge and see some general corals and come back in about 10 minutes.

The fisherman bait these fish with a shrimp/prawn at the end of a thin blue plastic wire weighted by shells and throw them on the hot pavement where aided by a blow, they pant for breath and die.

Dhanushkodi (Dhanushkoti) – A perfect beach.

The Royal Park Hotel organized a jeep for us, from Rameswaram, for Rs 1000/-. Later we located the tourist office in the bus stand. They told us we could have taken a bus to Dhanushkoti entrance and a fisherman’s jeep from there to Dhanushkoti tip for Rs 60.

It was too beautiful to take pictures. But I took a couple anyway and captured the rest in my mind’s eye.

Sarada Sarovar

The vacant sites around my house, fill up with water during the rains and create an eco-system par excellence. With frogs eating mosquitoes and cranes eating frogs. Nowadays dogs too hunt in these waters. And when the fish and crabs grow big, Kodigehalli children come fishing with nets or plastic packets.

I have egoistically named these ephemeral ponds – Sarada Sarovar after myself!
